| I
returned to traditional media after eight years of a highly
demanding career in corporate digital media. I felt like
I'd really lost my way creatively, and I wanted to get
back in touch with my first motivations in art.
I bought
a few spiral-bound sketchbooks, gouache, watercolors and colored inks,
and I went
on a rampage, diving head-first into a crucible of primary
gestures.
I
desperately tried to avoid falling into the trap of making
something that I thought was about something. I've come to
distrust intended meanings, because I then become
infatuated with that set of meanings and that approach,
and it becomes very restrictive. The moment something emerged
that I could identify, I thrashed it back into the ether.
I was resetting my creative compass, looking for a new
direction. The only truths I could rely on were the
properties of the materials, so I tried to respond to them
as purely and intuitively as possible.
