Channels
(2005-2008)

channel: the space extending between a pair of nearly parallel lines.

These channels draw me irresistably into the narrow spaces they define. I find myself mentally wandering their sinuous paths. As I experience them I'm reminded of a record needle sailing through the groove of a vinyl album, vibrating and generating a wide variety of experiences. In a similar way the channels I make generate a variety of emotions.

Each channel is a distinct and interesting space, and at the same time a map of that space. Each channel has its own feeling, which can change from one end to the other. Channels can be experienced in any sequence.

Their winding paths generate simple narrative structures that become more sophisticated with changes of line width, color, quality, and with the layering of channels, one upon another.

Channels can't be experienced at a distance, or in miniaturized form. They require you to be present. They are real-time visual experiences, and, for me, they promote contemplative looking.

Works in the Channels series are created at the boundary of intention and intuition. Although I sometimes approach them with intended meanings, they always take control in surprising ways and go beyond the ideas I bring to the studio. In this way they've proven to be a powerful means for the sustained exploration of emergent meaning.
